Doctor’s Appointments

Owen saw the ENT yesterday and he said there is no question that he needs tubes. He said that is most likely the cause of his hearing loss and speech delays. Something interesting that we learned is that his uvula isn’t completely formed, probably due to his prematurity. He doesn’t have a cleft, but there is a little dimple in his uvula that the doc said could be affecting the drainage of the eustachian tubes. I need to call today to schedule the surgery, but it will likely be within the next 2 weeks. One week after the surgery, he’ll have another hearing test to verify that it was fluid causing the loss and not an underlying issue. The doc said that it’s not likely that there is a bigger problem, but that given Owen’s prematurity and some of the meds he was on in the NICU, he is at a higher risk for hearing loss.

Ryan had his 4 year well-child checked scheduled for Monday. My little brain was convinced that his appointment was at 2:45…even when they called to confirm the Friday before, I heard 2:45. So, imagine my surprise when we arrived at 2:45 and they couldn’t find him on the appointment list. She finally discovered that he had been marked as a no-show because his appointment was actually at 10:45. I was SO embarrassed! I NEVER forget stuff like that, so I spent the rest of the day beating myself up over being such a ditz. Having the appointment at 10:45 would have been much better for our other plans that day, so I was super irritated to have screwed up. You’ve never seen a sadder face than Ryan’s when I had to tell him that he wouldn’t be seeing the doctor. The poor kid nearly cried!

Thankfully, they were able to get him in today. I had to drag all 3 kids with me because Joseph headed back to work today. They were all really good and Ryan was a champ. He got 4 shots today and hardly cried! He was just excited to get some bandaids šŸ˜† He weighed in at 34 pounds and was 39 inches this time around. He’s just a slow grower! But, his growth in height this year brought his BMI down, and the doc said he is now at a good weight for his height.

We got back for the babies’ 18 month appointments next month. Lately I’ve felt like we lived at the doctor’s office, so it will be nice to have a break after August is over!

Owen and Logan need to be friends. You described the exact situation we had with Logan’s hearing loss. How crazy!! Good luck with everything and email me with any questions you might have.

Surgery always sounds so scary : ( I’m glad that they have an idea of what it is and what they can do to help.

honestly, ryan’s not much smaller than nate. about 36 lbs and 39-ish inches. except that nate probably *would* have cried. i hope owen’s surgery goes well. for what it’s worth, i’ve heard it is a pretty easy thing to do and most kids recover quite rapidly (like up and running by the end of the day). but watching your little one go and knowing what they are going through is hard. i’m sure everything will be fine.

Did you like the ENT? I thought that he was great; the boys’ surgeries are in 2 weeks.

That’s great!!! He’s way bigger than Ethan now. Ethan was 30 lbs and 36 inches at his 4yr. I think he’s just destined to be short. Where Ryan just make grow to a decent height. šŸ™‚

Let us know how Owen’s surgery goes. I hope it will help things.
